Photo and Caption from Graham Burchill. A photograph of National Fire Service dispatch riders before the days of radio communications, these provided the communications network both on and off the fire ground. My father Tom Burchell is second from the left, in 1939. He applied to rejoin his regiment the Royal Artillery but was deemed too old and was detailed into the A.F.S which then became the N.F.S. Note the blackout hoods on the headlights. Not sure of the site but I think the church spire in the background is St Mary Redcliffe

Photo and Caption from Graham Burchill: Group of N.F.S personnel undergoing physical training during the second world war, Tom Burchell is second row fourth right in the vest. He had been a P.T.I in the army for 12 years and resumed the role in the N.F.S Not to many looks of enthusiasm in the photograph
