John Hillier – 31.08.2023

It is with much sadness we have recently received notification of the death of AF&RS pensioner John Hillier, who passed away on 31st August at Southmead Hospital.

John was well liked by all who knew him.  He was stationed at Avonmouth and Bedminster stations and played football for the Bristol Fire Brigade (BFB) Wednesday team. He was a good all round sportsperson, playing basketball as well as football, his height obviously helped in both sports. He played at centre half for not only the BFB side but the South West District side and the England Fire Service team. Colleagues remember him as having a wicked sense of humour and was a popular member of the team, a lovely person to be with both at work and socially.

John’s funeral service is at Canford Crematorium on Wednesday 20th September at 1.30pm and afterwards there will be a gathering at Henbury Golf Club following the service – Henbury Golf Club. Henbury Hill, Westbury on Trym, Bristol, BS10 7QB.

Black attire is not essential, so please wear what you feel comfortable in to celebrate the life of John.

If any colleagues or friends of John have any fond memories/funny stories, please can you pass them on to his daughter Joanna (via Ian and Chriss) to include them in the service (if possible).  Please email any memories to avonfirepensioners@gmail.com.

Donations in memory of John can be sent to the Firefighters Charity website. The Fire Fighters Charity – Changing The Lives Of Our Fire Fighting Heroes!

Our thoughts are with his daughter Joanna and family at this sad time.

A letter of condolence is being arranged.
