Richard (Dick) Probert aged 92 years, passed away on 24th March 2025.
Dick joined Bristol Fire Brigade in 1958, serving at Bridewell before spending 10 years at Avonmouth.He was for many years a Leading Fireman on Blue Watch at A2 Southmead, retiring in February 1986.
After leaving the brigade, Dick resumed his career as a plumber and later passed on his expertise to apprentices as a lecturer at the City of Bristol College. He served as Justice of the Peace for more than 20 years and was also an Official Prison Visitor.
Aside from being a devoted gardener and allotment holder, Dick and wife Jean loved to travel. They visited a huge number of destinations, including Borneo, Namibia and Soviet-era Russia. They also visited Papua New Guinea, where Dick’s brother Ben (himself a former Bristol firefighter) lived and worked.
Dick is survived by Jean, to whom he was married for 65 years, and children Kate and Ian, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.At Dick’s request, more than £300 was donated in lieu of flowers at his funeral for the Fire Fighters Charity.
