Colin was one of those people who simply became the heart of Kingswood Fire station.  Everyone knew, respected and enjoyed being around him.

As Stuart Hacker shared with a smile “Colin was our mess manager on Red Watch, and honestly, he was brilliant.  His cooking was legendary, so good that we sometimes cut drill time short just to get to his meals.  There are countless stories about him, though probably not ones we can put in writing!  And when it came to driving under blue lights, no one did it better.  You could tell he’d driven London fire engines and buses; he had great skill and unbelievable speed.”

Colin also dedicated himself to supporting others as a union representative, proudly representing Avon at the annual conference.  He was well liked and trusted, not just by his watch but across the whole brigade.

His firefighting journey began in 1960 with the London Fire Brigade at Westminster.  When he moved to the West Country in 1968, Kingswood Fire Station became hi new home, quite literally.  He moved into a fire brigade house right beside the station when it opened in 1968 and stayed there for the rest of his life, always close to the place and the people he cared so much about.

Colin also took great pride in his children’s achievements from travelling throughout the UK and Europe with ‘The Firebirds’ Rock n Roll band, formed by his eldest son John in 1981, which is now led by his youngest son Jim, his daughter Denise joined the Ambulance service who will carry on his legacy of public service and commitment to helping others which made him very proud
