After being demobbed from the R.E.M.E. and applied to become a Fireman in the National Fire Service in Bristol, where he was accepted and started training in January 1964, at the age of 29 years. He was the Brigade’s oldest recruit on his training school. Following his training he was posted to Brislington Fire Station, where he soon became an active member of, as he referred to it, ‘his second family’. Roy spent his whole career at Brislington becoming involved with numerous activities in particular the Christmas Children’s parties and New Year’s parties. Roy retired from the Fire Service in 1987. He continued to be a very active person as a handyman at Soundwell Technical College until he finally retired to home life.
