Tom Edwards passed away on 1st January 2022 and his cremation followed on the 4th January.
Tom joined the original Community Fire Safety Team which developed the early Home Fire Safety Visits that we take for granted as being part of the Fire Service role today. Amongst other responsibilities, Tom took on the role of the schools’ liaison officer. Speaking in their assemblies he delivered interactive key messages highlighting the dangers of playing with matches and lighters. His skill in communication would have no doubt prevented many fires from breaking out from innocent hands.
He was an active member in setting up the Lifeskills-Learning for Living Safety Education and Training Centre in 2000 at the Create Centre in Bristol, still in full operation today. He was also regularly disguised in either the Welephant or the children’s TV character known as Fireman Sam (who is now referenced internally as FireFighter Sam) outfits at local schools and fêtes.
Tom was a gentleman, committed to his community education role and will be remembered by so many for his various brigade roles.
Tom retired from the Service in October 1999 he and his wife Megan moved to Spain.
