George ‘Brian’ Young aged 93 years passed away on 24th March 2026.
George’s mother was a head mistress when he was born and named him after her grandfather who served in World War 1, He was christened George Brian, he was always known as Brian throughout his life.
During Brian’s school years his love of Rugby enabled him to play at an international level eventually playing for Bristol until an injury prevented him. After Brian left school around 1947 he started to train as a Dental technician, during this period after the War jobs were very scarce, so Brian opted for a change and joined the Bristol Fire Brigade as a Fireman serving at Bridewell fire station a job he really enjoyed after some time, he was promoted to Leading Fireman and transferred to Southmead fire station. He always remembers a serious accident he attended on Southmead Road where a very young girl was killed a memory that stayed with him all of his life. After many years at Southmead transferred to the Fire Prevention Department using the skills he had gained operationally together with a period at the Fire Service training college at Moreton-in-Marsh.
Brian retired in 1973 and became a groundsman for Bristol University, during his spare time he enjoyed Golf and Fishing. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in his later years which was successfully removed but sadly Brian was never his old self again.
Brian is survived by his wife Margaret, to whom he was married for 73 years, and their son Robert.
