I was lucky to serve with him for four years on White Watch B6 Speedwell. He was one of the finest practical Firemen I ever served with and I learnt so much from Derek. He was always very calm under the pressures experienced at incidents, He always performed to an exceptional standard and could always be relied on 100%. He was also a very good driver and I always felt safe when Derek was driving us to incidents, nothing ever phased him and he probably unknowingly emitted a professional calmness that helped everyone else around him get the job done. Derek was also a keen volleyball player and captained the White Watch team to win the Brigade championship one year, probably early 1980’s.
A brilliant and capable Fireman who was an asset to White Watch and Avon Fire Brigade.
He will be sadly missed!
