Raymond Allen passed away 04 June 2021, aged 99 years.
Ray (Ches) joined Bristol Fire Brigade in 1948 and was posted to Bridewell Fire Station. He also served at Ashton Drive and finally at Avonmouth, where he retired in 1976 after 28 years service.
A former colleague described Ray as large in stature, but a gentle giant, a lovely man who would help anyone. Ray’s funeral service was held at South Bristol Crematorium, Bedminster Down. Monday 5th July 2021.
Ray thoroughly enjoyed his work and was forced to retire at the age of 55, as this was the ruling back then. Even in his 90’s he envied his son’s length of service in the brigade and often mentioned how they ‘kicked him out’ when he did not want to leave.
Ray had a very long and happy retirement and was always proud of the fact that he received a fire brigade pension for 45 years, a lot longer than he actually worked in the job! Although the Fire Brigade were probably not too impressed, with having to pay a pension for so long !
