Lyn Lloyd. QGM aged 83 years passed away on 25th June 2026.
Lyndon (Lyn) Lloyd was 83 when he passed away peacefully on the 25th June 2026.
Lyn joined the City of Bristol Fire Brigade (as it was then) in 1962 with his training school taking place at Speedwell Fire Station and started his career at A3 Avonmouth on Blue watch. In 1980 he was promoted to a Leading Fireman and transferred to White Watch at A3 Avonmouth. In 1981 Lyn was promoted to the rank of Sub Officer and went to work at Weston Super Mare’s office in Fire Prevention. In 1985 he transferred to C5 Bedminster on Green watch as their Sub Officer and then in 1995 he went back to A3 Avonmouth on White Watch (still as Sub Officer).
He retired from the Service in early 1998 after completing 36 years of service and then returned in July 1998 to a new role becoming a Hot Fire technician and BA Technician based between Temple Back and Brislington Fire Station. Lyn finally retired in March 2012 after a further nearly 14 years, meaning that he completed nearly 50 years in total.
On Tuesday 8th March 1988 Lyn was awarded the Queens Gallantry Medal (QGM) for his bravery in the Shell Mex Fire at Avonmouth Dock, where he disconnected the overhead fill pipe and removed charging and earth cables prior to driving two tankers away from the gantry that was on fire. Lyn never celebrated or highlighted this award, even after receiving it from Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace, choosing instead to store this in a family cupboard. This was due the fact he felt others involved in the fire, especially a certain member from the Shell Terminal Staff (Driver), who assisted him with the removal of the fuel tankers, never received the recognition they deserved.
Lyn spent the majority of his career working tirelessly for the Benevolent Fund (now Firefighters Charity) as a station-based representative all the way through to Brigade secretary. Every year he would host and support the Christmas Carol float collections across the service, culminating with the Christmas week collections at the Podium in Broadmead. To do this, he utilised watches and appliances from all over the county and Gareth recalls one particular year raising £12,000 for the charity in the last week. Lyn also assisted with the convalescence of serving / retired firefighters and widows. If he couldn’t get a volunteer to take a widow or injured firefighter to any of the Charity’s centres, he would generally be found doing this himself.
Hobbies wise, he was a real family man who loved to look after people. He had recently started to play Cribb in a local pub in Portishead and enjoyed socialising with anyone and everyone he met. As a younger man, Lyn was an accomplished footballer, representing Avon Fire Brigade for many years as well as Bristol Manor Farm AFC.
Lyn and Pat (Patricia) had been together since they were 16 (Lyn) and 14 (Pat) and had been married for 61 years, this year. They have 2 sons, Gareth and David and 3 grandchildren (plus my 2 girls who they treated as their own).
The funeral will take place on the 23rd July at 12:00pm at South Bristol Crematorium and the wake will follow at Clarence House in Portishead from 13:30 hours. There is no dress code, and all are welcome to attend.
Pat, Gareth and David have asked if anyone is attending that has worked with Lyn and they would like to, please could they line the route from the gates all the way to the crematorium for Lyn and the family’s arrival.
